SUMTER COUNTY'S CODE RED SYSTEM
The Code Red System was designed to replace the older "Reverse 911" system. It is much more flexible and has the ability to handle a far greater volume of calls.
- It seems that they are able to highlight the path of a storm and place calls ONLY to those homes in the highlighted area. It follows that someone living in Sumter County who did not get a call may have simply been outside the highlighted area. HOWEVER; if your next-door neighbor did not get a call, it is probably indicative of the fact that they are PROBABLY not in the database.
- You are limited to one home phone and one cell phone (or two cell phones) that may be registered.
- They will place phone calls to out of State cell phones that are being used in lieu of land lines by seasonal residents.
- An interesting note here is that you CAN request to be removed from the database when you go back up North BUT you will not be able to be reentered into the system when you return.
- Register online at www.sumtercountysheriff.org There is a CodeRed/Weather Warning logo at the bottom of the page… just click on that logo and it will take you to the registration page. Fill in the requested information and click on the "CONTINUE" block at the bottom of the page…. You will then have an opportunity to verify the information entered. Select either to go back and correct any information which may have been entered incorrectly or submit the information. You are finished. If you have trouble with this step, please call the office at the number listed in the next paragraph. (During normal business hours)
- When registering online, you can choose which alerts you wish to receive on your primary (home) and you secondary (cell) phones individually.
- Residents can also call the Emergency Management Office to get registered
- All you will need to know is your Sumter County address and your phone numbers.
- The number for the Emergency Management Office is: 352-569-6000
- In the future, there will be a provision for getting emergency email….. This has not been implemented yet, but full information will be publicized when it is.
Many of us have been in Winifred since the initial stages of development during the first part of 2004. We have seen many changes in The Villages since that time. Think back on what has happened since we moved to Winifred.
Lake Sumter Landing opened.
Publix opened

Rolling Acres Plaza Developed
No more Buffalo roaming the range
Barnes & Noble Opens
Sweet Bay Supermarket

- Expansion of The Villages Hospital

I am sure that there are myriad other things that could be added to this list, but the point is that The Villages is such a dynamic community that we seem to take monumental developments in stride and just consider them normal. How teriffic is that?
